In maintaining the tradition of Irish clans adopting the Aran sweater as a symbol of their heritage, the O’Connor Clan Aran Sweater is registered along with 500 Clan Aran patterns at the Aran Sweater Market (an Irish company, producing authentic hand knit Aran knitwear) on Inis Mor, Aran Islands, Ireland.

Our clan holds one of the most elaborate and vastly symbolic patterns of clan heritage & the O’Connor Clan Aran Sweater is viewed as a treasured and revered gift among O’Connor families.

Symbols of O’Connor Clan heritage:

  • Diamond Stitch -

The diamond stitch (visible on the side panels of the garment) represent the heraldry and regal lineage of the O’Connor Clan – from the ancient Gaelic sept of Cathal O'Connor / Cathal  Crobhdearg Ua Conchobair right up to the present day. The diamonds also pay homage to the noble ancestry from which we came and will ensure that our legacy as one of the great clans of Ireland will live on eternally.

  • Moss Stitch -

The moss stitching (which fills each of the diamond patterns) is representative of how the O’Connor Clan was regarded as both welcoming and hospitable in ancient times and reminds us to keep alive the ideals and values of our O’Connor ancestors.

  • Cable Stitch -

The centre stitch of cable signifies the manner in which the O’Connor Clan has became so positively entwined in shaping the culture of Ireland while also symbolically highlighting the strong influence which the O’Connor name has played and will forever play in the history of Ireland.

  • Honeycomb Stitch -

The honeycomb stitch represents the status that the O’Connor family name has earned as being resolute and determined and always at hand when the need for courage was apparent. It is also symbolic of the qualities that all O’Connors possess in terms of loyalty and allegiance to family and relations.

  • Link Stitch -

The link stitch represents the unbroken chain between the O’Connors who have emigrated from Ireland and those who remain at home – this symbol highlights the importance of the strong bonds that will forever link those of the O’Connor name to their Irish homelands.

The Clan Aran itself is hand knitted in the traditional báinín (pronounced ‘baw neen’) colour and this maintains the natural white of the wool. O’Connor Clan Aran Sweater is made of 100% pure new wool, is water repellent and fully breathable. It has been hand crafted in the traditional Irish style, and, with care, will last a lifetime.

It is significant that the patterns of the O’Connor Clan Aran sweater are embodied within the clan motto of “I Neither Fear Nor Despise” and we are proud to be connected with this authentic Irish craftwork.

In association with ClanArans.com (an Irish company, based on the Aran Islands, which provides authentic Aran sweaters from Irish knitters), our on-going promotional discount of USD$50 is exclusive to the O’Connor Clan.
