In Ireland the Oak tree was the most noble of the Chieftain trees.

The Lion is symbolic of Royal ancestry.

Just saw your post.  You may be aware that there are 5 different "Connor" families.  One of them is from the Derry area in the north.  Derry is an anglisation of Doire which means Oak in Irish.  My family came from the northern part of Galway/South Mayo.  This is the family of the "High King" of Ireland.  A branch of this family hail from Sligo.  The matter of the hearaldry is an English thing.  The Irish did not have these symbols.  It only became really popular after  the 1970's surge in finding our "roots"  Most Irish born people have no idea of their hearaldry, if in fact they have any.

Hope this enlightens you.
